Read on below to discover what Feldenkrais is all about…

Movement is life, without movement life is unthinkable – Moshe Feldenkrais

Reward the ease, not reward effort.  Now that is different. In so many of our activities we are encouraged to do more, to try harder, go faster, go further, to push through resistance and  to just keep going and going.

When following the Feldenkrais Method efforting is not rewarded.  In fact the effort will hinder you from finding the ease of movement which truly is the reward.  Good movement should feel good, and good movement should feel easy, light and smooth….effortless and reversible.  Consider maybe pain is your body telling you there is a better way to move than what you are currently doing!

There are many things that are different about the Feldenkrais Method when compared to other movement methodologies.  Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984), Judo Master, internationally renowned physicist, and educator, was the inventor of this method and devoted the last third of his life solely teaching what is now known as the Feldenkrais Method.  Supported now by the latest neuro-science, the Feldenkrais Method is a gentle yet highly effective way of changing how your brain coordinates your movement and posture.  Changes and awareness in movement habits can relieve pain and tension enabling you to move with more ease and be dynamically stable increasing strength, flexibility and endurance which may make a big difference to  both your work and play.

Often when working with movement you are told to listen to your body.  What do we listen for, the creaks and the squeaks?   What is really needed is to sense and feel our body, and its actions.  The movements of your body are controlled by your central nervous system, both conscious and subconscious and the product of your skeletal and muscle action is your movement.  When we first learn to move as infants we utilise our senses and explore and try different movement options and gradually build our movements.  Over the years, things such as injury, over use, or lifestyle habits, our movement and movement options change.  However, through having awareness of our movements and exploring different options as done in Feldenkrais lessons you can learn to better functionally integrate your whole body movements, and maintain and increase your movement abilities and choices irrespective of your current age or ability.

Feldenkrais teaching is done in two different ways, individual or group classes.

In group classes, known as Awareness through Movement lessons (ATM), you are verbally guided through movements and variations thereof.  This way you can explore through the movement, sensing and feeling what gives you quality and ease of movement.

In individual lessons known as Functional Integration, the Practitioner uses precise touch and movement to assist the client to learn various movement options, and may also be used to address a specific issue such as chronic neck pain.

Both ways require you to actively sense the movements.

Common applications of Feldenkrais Method are to improve movement and posture related conditions, as well as remove pain such as knee and lower back, neck tension, and headaches.  It is often also used to recover function following injury.  However, it can assist you to improve in everything you do as you develop awareness, a fuller self-image, and how you interact in your environment.  The learning and the understanding is in the experiencing, and the knowledge gained leads to the changes in your movements, making it truly you using your whole self, mind, and body.
